Chemical Properties
Camphor is a cyclic monoterpene ketone, which is bornane with an oxo substituent at the 2 - position. It is a naturally occurring monoterpenoid and has the property of sublimation.
Purity
Usually available in purity grades such as 95%, 96%, and 99%.
Uses
In the Plastics Industry: Used in the manufacture of cellophane as a plasticizer for PVC.
In National Defense: Serves as an explosion stabilizer and retarder for smokeless explosives.
In Medicine: Used as a cardiotonic, drip - cooling agent, analgesic, preservative, insecticide, etc. It can be made into camphor spirit. Internally, it is an excitant and carminative; externally, it is a skin irritant for neuralgia, muscle pain, or joint pain. It can also be used to treat frostbite (unbroken) due to its local stimulating effect.
