In the **acid-catalyzed (novolac) method**, excess phenol (molar ratio 1:0.7–0.9) reacts with formaldehyde using acids (e.g., oxalic or hydrochloric acid) at 100°C, yielding a thermoplastic intermediate (novolac), which is crosslinked with hexamethylenetetramine (hexamine) at 120–180°C. Both methods involve step-growth polymerization, with curing producing a rigid, thermoset network.
