What is H-faujasite zeolite

**Introduction to H-Faujasite Zeolite** H-Faujasite zeolite is a highly porous, crystalline aluminosilicate with a well-defined three-dimensional framework, known for its exceptional acidity and large surface area. As the protonated form of faujasite (FAU-type), it features a 12-membered ring pore structure, enabling superior catalytic performance in petrochemical and refining processes, such as fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) and hydrocracking. Its strong Brønsted acid sites and thermal stability make it ideal for acid-catalyzed reactions, including isomerization and alkylation. Additionally, H-Faujasite’s high ion-exchange capacity and molecular sieving properties are valuable in adsorption and separation applications. This versatile material is widely used in industrial catalysis, environmental remediation, and gas purification.

Preparation Process: To prepare H-faujasite zeolite, first synthesize Na-faujasite (NaX or NaY) via hydrothermal crystallization using sodium aluminate, sodium silicate, and water at 80–100°C for 24–48 hours. Filter, wash, and dry the product. Convert Na-faujasite to NH4-faujasite by ion exchange with ammonium nitrate solution (1M, 80°C, 2–3 hours, repeated 2–3 times). Wash and dry the NH4-form. Finally, calcine NH4-faujasite at 450–550°C for 4–6 hours to decompose NH4+ ions, yielding H-faujasite (protonated form). Ensure controlled heating to preserve the zeolite framework.

Usage Scenarios: H-faujasite zeolite is widely used as a highly efficient catalyst and adsorbent in industrial and chemical processes. Its high surface area, uniform pore structure, and strong acidity make it ideal for catalytic cracking of hydrocarbons in petroleum refining, enhancing fuel production. It also facilitates alkylation, isomerization, and hydrocracking reactions. In gas separation, H-faujasite selectively adsorbs molecules like CO₂, N₂, and O₂, aiding in air purification and carbon capture. Additionally, it serves as a desiccant for drying gases and liquids. Its ion-exchange properties are valuable in water softening and wastewater treatment, removing heavy metals and contaminants effectively.
